I always read when I eat. (My husband finds that funny, as he once left a container for corn plasters on the table, and noted that my son and I had read it several times without even thinking.) And no, "I read always" doesn't sound good to me, although I could probably think of a rare occurence wher...

There are lots of exercises and websites online written for ESL students. Maybe you can find some of those and give her some links. I have some listed on my website http://fog.ccsf.edu/~lfried under "Links" on the left side of the page.

I think there is plenty of room for more on-line listening exercises. I hope they will be free. ;)

I can't imagine why you can't use any materials. I understand if they want to focus on conversation or discussion, but there are a lot of things you can do that still require materials.

Hi Lorikeet. You are certainly quite the veteran on this forum, although I see you now have some help monitoring the kids to keep them from flaming each other. Larry Oh! It just dawned on me that there's a big list of "moderators" who aren't! Dave was testing something and put them all up there, bu...

Nice to see you around, Larry. I read "The English Verb" a couple years ago, after hearing about it here. It made a lot of sense to me, and I decided to use the ideas to teach my high level students "another way" to look at the English verb. It went over some of their heads, but a lot of them found ...

Re: Grammar question: His sister and "he / him" li

Hello, I'm not sure if I should use "he / him" in the following sentence. 1. His sister and "he / him" live in Beijing. I know that a good way to check for if the subjective pronoun is correct is by eliminating the begining subject and saying only the second subjective pronoun. You would say "He li...

I use the Oxford Dictionary's American version. MacMillan's sounded the same to me to. I think I have 5 syllables, although one of them is pretty reduced. Somehow, "irreprable" doesn't sound quite right. The example in Cambridge sounded like it was really dropped.

I have had similar kinds of students. Once a substitute asked me how I did it, as the student had somewhat hijacked the class. It of course depends on what the student is doing. My students included some very educated Russians who wanted to show how much grammar they understood by asking involved qu...

You might also consider posting in the job boards. I think there might also be some people there who have been through similar problems.

The only problem with saying "pin" and putting an "s" in front for "spin" is that the normal initial "p" in English is aspirated, with a puff of air, and it isn't aspirated after an "s". If the student is saying "pin" properly, you don't want them to add a puff of air after the "p" in spin. The most...
