Hi beyn, Thank you for your recommendation. As a matter of fact, I was on babylon.com myself before posting my message. Babylon-Pro 5.0 is indeed a very nice and sophisticated program, but isn't it more of a bilingual desktop dictionary than a monolingual one? I wouldn't need all those fancy-shmancy...

Software recommendaiton (English-English dictionary)

I'm looking for an English-English dictionary that has the following features:
1. A single click on the word will pop up the definition.
2. Can be used on any text.
3. I can listen to the pronunciation of the word.

Does any of you have some recommendations?

Hi Patch, I'm afraid you can't get out of taking the TOEFL. It's a requirement for every international student who wants to enter a graduate or undergraduate program in the U.S. There are a few exeptions to the rule. You can read about them on www.ets.org under "Who Should Take the TOEFL Test?" If I...

Hi Kathy, Thank you very much again for your reply and help. You wouldn't happen to come to Massachusetts in the future to give a presentation on on-line teaching, would you? If you don't mind, I have a few more questions. Do you know if WHITEBOARD can support foreign characters, too? Can stu...

Hi Monseul,

I agree that the news recordings on voanews.com/specialenglish are on the slow side, but I find that the audio files found in its "Wordmaster" section have a faster pace. Have you tried those? You can also find news read at normal speed on voanews's website under "VOA English".

Hi Manny3, How about a pantomime? I've done this with my adult students and we had a blast. Write an action and an adverb on a piece of paper. Since it was a revision exercise, I used all the adverbs we covered in class. I folded up the pieces and put them in a hat. Then I had each student take one....

Language teaching via the Internet - the HOW TO-s

Nowadays you can see more and more ads where teachers offer language tutoring via the Internet. They all tell you that you only need to download one of those free PC to PC calling programs, install a webcam, and you are all set to go. I understand that this set-up could be really good and convenient...

Could it mean an official translation of your certificate? That's my best bet.
Why don't you ask them what they mean by it?

Hi EH,

I was just absolutely fascinated by what you wrote in your last post here: "... /s/ is one of the latest developing sounds in English; only by age 6 or 7 have about 90% of kids mastered it." Where can I find similar information about the other English sounds on the net?

Flash?????

Hi, I've just finished reading the previous thread ("websites"), and I got to see some really nice activities and great websites. As a matter of fact, I've gotten rather interested in learning how to use Flash myself. The only problem is, I have no idea what it is and how to go about getting experie...

Hi Marie,

How about using some British movies and/or TV shows? You could use some clips from "East is East" or "Bend it Like Beckham", just to name a few.

Hi Kathyfelts:

Hi Kathy, I've read almost all your replies about online teaching and you strike me as someone very experienced and knowledgeable in this field. I'm playing with idea of getting into online teaching myself, too but I'd like to do some reading about it first. Are there any Complete-Idiot's-type of bo...
