Thanks Woodcutter, I hadn't thought about East Anglia but I'm sure it's got to be worth including. No, I realise this is a bit of a thin thread, and it's not anything that's going to generate discussion or even very much interest, if any. However, it's a serious project and all info will be grateful...

Have you thought about getting your students to keep a diary/journal in English? You can get students to keep a record of their week, and then turn this into a classroom activity, perhaps getting pairs or small groups to compare notes and write reports, etc.

Sorry Woodcutter, I'm as strapped for cash as the next ESL bod, so only bags of good will and gratitude are available. However, should a book come out of it at the end, you'll get a signed copy (for a reduced price, of course!) Now, I see you were in Vancouver......

Around the world in 80 cities

Whilst planning our big trip to Canada, which we’ll be doing in a couple of years, I had a sort of Jules Verne moment and started thinking what if I developed this into a course. My idea is to go around the world in 80 cities, stopping off each week at various ports-of-call around the English speaki...

For what it's worth, I used to be a bit of a reformed smoker when it came to using L1 in the classroom. Equiped with my newly issued diploma, I set out to rid the world of this evil scourge. Now, a few years down the line, middle aged, balding, struggling to keep up with all the latest issues, runni...

No, not really any more confusing than it is anyway. Try reducing the name of the form to “ing form” and look at ways in which the present progressive is used. Later, when you’re ready to introduce the past progressive or perfect progressive forms, etc., you can look at other uses of the “ing form”....

Mmm, I've sometimes wondered about the name "present perfect" when struggling to get the idea across. It often doesn't seem to have much to do with the present nor to be perfect either. A better term would be helpful!

Ich fliege nach New York vier mal im Jahr. I fly to New York four times a year. Ich fliege nach New York nächste Woche. I’m flying to New York next week. The trouble starts if you try to compare the languages as there appears to be something missing from German or something unnecessary in English. Y...

Thanks. I will try harder to keep up with my threads; I have tended to let things slide a bit there up to now. It's very nice of you to accept me back - one life down!

A long overdue apology.

Dear Linguists,
I should like to apologize for my comments, or rather for my attitude, when discussing Nixon and the present perfect. If you'll have me back, I'd like to take part in your forum once again.

I, Mac.

Web guide

Hello there,
I've been asked to put a web guide together for elt teachers to use with their students. The aim is to encourage learner independence. I wonder if any of you could give me some tips about good sites i can add to the list. Thanks very much.
