Hi Wangyu, If you have control over the curriculum, there is a lot you can do, if not... Most high school students recognise that English is the language of the Internet, western music, Hollywood. You can spice up your lessons with songs and movies to get them interested. Set reasonable targets for ...

I don't know of any text that can help you, although I'm sure one exists somewhere. We covered this on my teacher training course way back when. If they are pre-literate, you'll need to start with the alphabet and lots and lots of visuals and TPR (total physical response). For the sake of practicali...

There'll come a time when you want to move from ESL on to other things, and when that happens you'll see the value of your International Business course.

Your work in local government will be of use if you were involved in meetings, interviews, project planning and all that kind of stuff that comes up in Business English. A lot of people prefer to teach general English first, since BE is more specialised, but on the other hand I've heard others say B...

As teachers, we should always encourage learners when they have questions, and we all love our Itasan.
But, Itasan, if you submit questions in batches of 5 or 10, we'll love you more.

I would say this is not as widespread at the moment as you may think. Most Asian countries can source Westerners to teach actual classes. Also, this is a field that is still under quite some development. The company I work for does e-learning for business English in Asia, but we don't use live tutor...

Retaining language
How would you deal with a situation where you are teaching a group of students who rarely use the language outside class. For example, they may have to deal with foreign visitors very occasionally.
How would you get them to retain the language?

I find that most exec.s don't deal with letters very much at all, but most correspondence is email, of course. This, however, is not reflected in most coursebooks at all. I would look at the specific types of correspondence that they deal with, and go into sentence structures, effective vocab etc. R...

Hello Shahramca, I cannot agree that we are being culturally and socially insensitive towards immigrants by playing 'hangman'. You don't state so directly, but you infer that some of these immigrants and foreign students may come from countries where people really are hanged, and that that is where ...

I would say Google is the concordance tool. You can get a really good idea of usage by, for example, googling "interested in" (750 million hits) and "interested to" (19 million hits). Google has an incredibly sophisticated search algorithm and it is a fantastic tool for ESL teachers. I use it everyd...

You should always adapt the materials to the students, and not the other way round. As a BE teacher, the book is your tool, and if it's the wrong tool for the job, it will be a disservice to the students. I have found myself in similar situations before, and I know how tough it can be. Keep pushing,...
