I think we may be speaking about different circumstances, Roger, and you have entirely missed my point if you think that I demonize writing as "useless" or "counterproductive." I made a presumption based on Mehajaby's original post, in which she said she would be "working with refugees to Canada, ma...

A student must learn to read, and before he can do that he must learn how to write; one step leads to the next. I'm not so sure I agree with you Roger. I think there is a difference between word/letter recognition and writing. This thread originated with someone concerned with teaching new immigran...

A few comments: lolwhites: If I see "melon" on a menu, I think it's the non-count melon (as in some melon) since it wasn't offered as "a melon" in which case that would be the whole meal, as you explained. It's that category of food that can make for some interesting statements. ("I ate a cake" or "...

"He has lived in Korea for ten years" means he started living in Korea ten years ago, and has continued living there up until now.

"He lived in Korea for ten years" means he lived in Korea in the past for a period of ten years, but you don't know which ten years it was.

First of all, thanks for explaining what TTT means <grin>. I think I'm a little behind in the abbreviations department! I think there has to be a nice mix between TTT and STT. When I started teaching ESL in 1968, no one was talking about too much TTT. Although we had students respond, repeat, and us...

When I taught ESL to assembly line workers at a company, we wrote the lessons to match what the employer was interested in. The students were released from their jobs to attend, and the employer made it very clear that learning English was an important activity. Among the things we did (I worked wit...

I'm not sure I have the same definition of "fossilization" in my head as the rest of you, but as a teacher of ESL to adults in California, I find what I consider "fossilization" most often in students who have lived in this area for many years (sometimes as many as 30!) and never had the chance to g...

I have no experience teaching kids, but I have taught beginning level zero-English classes to adults with many different language backgrounds in the same class. If you are really interested in helping them learn, they will feel it, and I'm sure they will try their best. You can use pictures and obje...

Katie-- I am going to be teaching a pronunciation class next semester, so I've been thinking about how I'm going to do it. I know I will spend a lot of time on individual sounds and minimal pairs in different ways. However, I know it will also be necessary to focus on the rhythm of English, on stres...

Re: I use these to keep it interesting

Hi, the best I have found for that type of student is at http://eslgames.com/edutainment/ and the best game is at http://eslgames.com/wordup/ With those two I have every student older than 12 covered, they are GREAT tools ; ) Um, maybe I'm the only one who reads all the posts in all the categories,...

I don't know if this is what you had in mind, but when I was teaching the very beginning level of ESL to adults, one of the things I did was to make a set of alphabet cards for each student. The letters were sort of small (all fit on one 8-1/2 x 11 sheet as I recall). I cut them out and gave each st...
