party game ideas
I am part of a volunteer program that pairs English speaking tutors with Mexican American students. Next month we are having a picnic for the tutors, students, and families. I am looking for some good "mixer" games to do, that don't require an extensive knowledge of Spanish or English, but would give everyone a chance to get to know each other. I was thinking of trying a craft or cooperative activity. Thanks for your help!

Do you have access to the canopy of a parachute - a round one with a hole in the middle? I get mine at the surplus stores and they are usually white or green or orange. Be careful not to get one that is square or has a lot of holes in it. There are a ton of games you can play with the parachute canopy and it is loads of fun with all ages. If you can get one I will write out some games. Otherwise go to a web site with picnic games - there are a ton of them. Races are really fun especially if they are funny. Sack races, two legged races, dress up in funny clothes, carry the egg, carry the ping pong ball, throw the paper plates and see who gets the furthest. A good game of co-operative baseball is fun - You choose teams by asking people to look at their nails - those who turn their hands over to look at them go together and those who hold them out flat go together. Then play as usual but when the first batter is out or gets a home run, they join the team in the outfield. Gradually all the players are absorbed into the outfield team and it is increasingly hard for the batters to get anywhere so makes it really challenging. See Jim Deacove for more co-operative games.
