ranking activities
When students have ranked things in order of importance or preference or whatever (eg the most important things in life are 1:health 2:money: 3:relationships 4:career...) what speaking activities can the students then do with such lists?

They could get in groups and explain why they made their choices. You could have them line up according to their first choice and then have a debate between one end of the line and the other. Hard to imagine why this is relevant to them though and that could be a good discussion - why someone would chose this as a topic and why they would use such a measure to decide which was more important. I would be stubborn and put 1 beside all if I was in that class. Perhaps if they think of a good reason for one to be dominant over the others you could find a different way to assess than ranking.
