any ideas for the first day of classes?

Post by hy2958 » Mon Aug 28, 2006 8:16 am

I will start a new Business English class for 40 MBA students in China next month. I want to carry out some interesting activities in the first class which can arouse the students' interests. And I can find their English proficiency. The old way in which each student stands up and introduces himself or herself may be boring. A preliminary ESL test may make students feel nervous.

Does anybody recommend any activity or have any suggestion?

I would suggest giving them the outline for the course and going over the requirements for marks carefully. That would be motivation enough for most students. You can assign small groups for them to work in with their assignments - making a business report or during their public speaking sessions and they can meet and introduce themselves in these groups. Outline all the facilities available to help them in their course if you have outside help or recommend good texts and so on. Go over the ideas that would help them be good students and your requirements during class - participation, attendance and give them a marking outline of what you are looking for in assignments. If you have time, go over the first assignment and get them started with doing an example as a class.

Well why don't you ask them to tell you what they expect from the class and you and how they would like to work in the class or at home. Not just tell them what you expect from them etc.

I would say that you decide together on some things.

This will remove the tention and will show them that you value theie opinion too.

yeah!
The old way that let the stuents intrduce themselves is not useful in the calss.
The students in your class is not kids or middle school students. so most of them are adult, So ask everyone to stand up and introduce will make them feel boring. and they will think that you are only a mediocre teacher.
My suggestion is that the first class , you can introduce youself first. and tell them you teaching target of this term shorty and sweety, then talk about someting else which can make them relax, such as, the movie you watched in the holiday, the place of intreseting that you visited. ...
Ask them some question about the movie or something ..then they can answer you easily and they will talk with you soon ....

Correct they are adults so they have opinion on what they expect from the class and how they would like to work.

They may have nice ideas that may seem useful.

May I say that even children and teenagers prefer to talk about their expectations from the teacher and the lesson and the rules of the classroom than stand up to introduce themselves.

We should involve our students in the teaching-learning process.
