The AFC Asian Cup 2007 and English classes

Post by Cannibal_Clown » Thu Jun 14, 2007 12:50 am

Hi guys,

I would like to introduce an activity for my Korean middle school classes based on the current AFC Asian Cup tournament which is about to begin on 7 July, but need a bit of inspiration, referably next week or at latest, the week commencing 25 June, as the tournament commences on 7 July.

Does anybody have ideas for lesson plans that have worked for them in the past that have been successful where 14-15 year old kids can actaully learn something about a) football, b) geography or c) something else and create some excitement? It seems to be a bit blase here, or at least in Incheon anyway.

I thought about a group based football tipping competition to incorporate learning about some new countries, where each group of 6 in every class draws a random country out of the 16 contenders. But the problem is that everyone will want Korea, and nobody will want to draw Japan out of the hat. But I scrapped that plan.

I also toyed with the idea of a 'Race Around The World' or 'Amazing Race' with a football passport where students find out answers through clues before getting a stamp saying that they have got the requirements of that particular country (16 in total). But I am having a bit of trouble trying to link it to conversational English.

As I continue to search, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
