International letters to Santa
I'm teaching English in Japan and am wondering how to go about doing this activity with my junior high students. I'd like some suggestions on what the students should include in their letters, and how to address them. If anyone has any information, pleaselet me know. Thanks.

I'm not too sure myself. I used to address mine to the North Pole and they would disappear, but some people claim that Santa lives in Finland, and that would make more sense as there is actually land there. The Finns certainly have the famous linguist "Santa Clause" in residence-

perhaps Santa Claus himself is in Greenland?
I don't think that Santa and the elves are too fussy but I think the form is generally "Dear Santa. I have tried to be a good boy/girl - I'm sorry about X and X. I would like X and X and X and X and X and X. Yours X
Of course mince pies must be supplied with the letter, so it will be a good way for you to practice toy vocabulary and cadge a lot of mince pies off the students.

What I'm wondering is this:
If you live in the US, you can just put an envelope addressed to "santa claus" or "santa claus, North Pole" and the USPS takes care of it. I think they send it up to Alaska.
Something tells me that the Japanese postal service isn't going to be quite as accomodating, but since it's so easy to mail it in the US, even the USPS doesn't post the EXACT address of where to mail them. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Father Christmas in UK
In the UK we can send it to:
Santa
Reindeerland
SAN TA1
It will be directed to the right place... The Royal Mail are very good at picking them out and ensuring Father Christmas gets them. You can even find a templated letter at:
http://www.kids-printables.co.uk/resour ... letter.pdf
Internationally Finland is the best place to write to: Santa Claus, Santa Claus Village, FIN-96930 Arctic Circle, Finland.
Now let's not forget Santa's a forward thinking guy and he can now be reached at: http://www.northpole.com/
Obviously international post does take a bit longer, so I would suggest getting them there as quickly as possible.

I saw Santa's mail box in Nuuk Greenland. They have an enormous box outside the post office and the reindeer bring all the letters posted "Santa Claus, North Pole" right to his post box. I don't think he gets to answer them on paper but of course, bring the right gifts as an answer. Read more at santa.gl
