teaching the future tenses: a preliminary idea/ activity

Post by James Trotta » Sat Jan 10, 2004 9:12 am

My students recently asked me to explain the difference between "will do" "will be doing" "will have done" and "will have been done". I made this little exercise to help show them the differences, the idea being that after they do this little exercise thay can interview each other (in this alterante reality where everyone has a dream job) to practice the future tenses. What do you think about the interviews as a means of practicing the future? How about my dialogue? How would you complete it? Do you know of any other leeson plans focusing on future, future continuous, future perfect (active and passive)?

Interviewer: This is James Trotta, right fielder for the New York Yankees. Nice to have you on the show James.

James: Thanks. It's good to be here.

I: Where do you see yourself next year?

J: When the season starts, I think _______________________ (play) for the Yankees. I hope that we ______________ (finish) in first place and that I ___________________ (lead) the league in home runs again.

I: You've accomplished so much in your career. What do you think you _________________ (accomplish) by the end of your career?

J: I hope I __________________ (win) a few more world series rings.

I: Do you think you ____________________ (vote) into the Hall of Fame?

J: Maybe I _________________ (vote) in. I don't really worry about stuff like that. I just want the team to do well.

I: How do you think baseball ____________________ (change) by the end of your career?

J: Well I think that steroids ______________________ (ban) and I think that players ______________________ (make) more money. Of course, we never really know what the future _______________________ (bring).

I: Well we appreciate your thoughts on the future of your personal career and baseball in general. It's been a pleasure to have you on the show.

J: Thanks for having me.
