English Club

Post by k_helmy » Sun Feb 22, 2004 11:15 pm

I am starting an English club in my school as an extra curricular activity. I need to use a course book. Any suggestions about a suitable course book?

Why not do more games with English in your club? And then, your Englidh club must be intreseting. Because, it is very boring if someone have to read a book in the club after school. It is enough for those who are busy for all day to read. I believe that club is where let someone relax himself if he doesn't read any book.

I tend to agree. A textbook for a club sounds rather odd. If anything, why not have the club MAKE a book of sorts? Let them brainstorm the contents.

Otherwise, if you want reading activities, there are plenty of books out there, but reading is just a part of English. What is the focus? Extensive reading? Contact with other schools? Speeches and debates?

How about showing English movies and getting the scripts and then acting them out with the appropriate characters. If they don't understand the plot you can have subtitles in your language the first time and then go over each "chapter" of the movie if it is on DVD one by one. The scripts are on line for most movies or you could have them copy down the English subtitles for thier character. They can learn the songs too and sing along. There are English lyrics at www.lyrics.com Afterwards they can make up a movie based on the same ideas but more appropriate to their own culture and situation.

Hi there,
well, I started an English Club at our Hospital. I teach English classes, 3 levels 5 days a week as well. Anyway the club is to generate enthusiasm for learning English and to mostly have fun. So, heavy emphasis on games and a theme. Did a movie theme, Nemo, watched the movie, questionaire form while watching. Next up Karaoke and fill in the lyrics. Planning on a scavenger hunt in future. I also do a lucky draw for simple prizes and have light refreshments. So far well recieved-almost too well ha ha!

I love your idea, Sally, on getting scripts and re-enacting the scenes-I will try it out. Anyone else out there doing something like a club, I would love to share/exchange ideas. thanks, tom
