help with teaching conversation to Japanese ladies

Post by angelasaeki » Thu Mar 04, 2004 1:02 pm

Hello, I just agreed to teach a small conversation class once a week for an hour. I don't know much about the class yet, except that it will vary between 2-6 Japanese students, mostly ladies in their 20's at a false-beginner level. All of my experience is with teaching private students, mostly adult men, one on one. I haven't taught a group of ladies before, so I'm looking for good teaching ideas. I would appreciate any fun ideas you all have, especially about what to do on the first day I teach for breaking the ice, introductions etc. Thanks in advance for helping! :)

Forgot to add that the students already know each other (I think) it is just me who will be new, taking over for their previous teacher.

Perhaps you have already started and if so you will know how much fun this group can be. You can do anything with them and they will love it I am sure. My group did some cooking, went to the local temple, shopping, local festivals and on and on. They never seemed to stop laughing, they were such good sports. Of course at first only the oldest were allowed to reply to me but that gradually changed as I looked at them expecting them to talk or they just couldn't wait to share some information. We pretended we were in an English speaking city and that people were speaking English to us or we could only speak English and they were amazed that so many people could speak English back. I think it was the greatest lesson. They will be your best friends from Japan for life.
