Teaching Beginners
Hi all. I'm studying my Cert TESOL - doing prac. I'm about to switch from an advanced class to beginners. I have to focus on Speaking, topic, Australian Wildlife. Can anyone offer any suggestions/comments/ideas? I've never worked with these guys before, mixed cultures, all young adult. All advice appreciated

Here are some activities that worked for me:
Teach them basic classroom English right away. "What does that mean?" "I don't understand." "How do you spell ________?" "Can you say that again?"
They can do some simple translation up on the board. Tell them to write whatever they are feeling on the board in their native language. Then ask them to go up again and translate what they wrote into English.
Teach them the different parts of a face. Then draw a big circle on the board and ask individual students to go up and draw a part ("Draw eyes!" "Draw a nose!"
Teach them to identify different things in the classroom. You can also have them point out colors.
If you are using a coursebook, have students describe what they see in the pictures in English. You can write any new words up on the board.
Write pattern sentences up on the board, and get students to read out the sentence, adding a word/deleting a word/changing a word.
Have them repeat phrases and sentences from the book using different voices.
Give them a lot of review to reinforce what they have learned. You can give a quiz at the end of each class, or do a dictation of some sentences they covered before.
