Wow those classes seem too big for conversation for one teacher. About punishment I can tell you this: you must have a system. You cannot punish a student because you are mad, or let an infraction go because you are in a good mood. My class dicipline improved dramatically when I adopted a three-strikes-you're-out system. If they are bad I put a mark by their name on the board, and if they get three marks then they have to stay late after class. Sure, at first this ate into my personal time but it took less than 2 weeks for the kids to adjust. You can use other punishments like writing or whatever, but I think punishments that cause them to miss out on playtime are the most effective. Depending on the school's setup and policy you could also reward good students by letting them out of class a couple minutes early. If they have something to do after class some students will become very motivated to get the extra free time.
Anyway get a system, and do not wait until you are mad to dicipline a student. I think perfect behavior is impossible, but a dramatic improvement will make you feel a whole lot better.

A simply but effective punishment is to get them to write lines.
It works well for all ages. For the younger children get them to write the days of the week or numbers out 20 times.
For the older children I make them write out long sentances upto 100 times.
However make them do it as homework or after class, you dont want them missing out on your class.
After a couple of weeks if they are misbehaving all you need to do is get out the sheet of paper with the new lines to write and they are good as gold.
