teaching people over 55

hi, everyone

I'm about to take on some English classes with students over 55 years of age. Does anybody have anything to share with me as regards the most common problems they're faced with and how to deal with these?

Adult students might want to see more "practical results" and "efficiency" of learning other than just enjoying the process of learning aimlessly as kids do, so high level of practicality of your teaching might be a challenge for you. First of all, get clear about the purposes of their learning English, for fun ? work? life? then you can adapt your teaching plan and focus on their interests quicklier.

For older students, be prepared for a much longer learning curve and retention problems.

Also, they may have lots of fossilized English. Don't correct them too often. Learn how to guide.

Hi Garpfan,

You're teaching adults. People over 55 are just adults. Don't treat them (us) any differently. Don't expect any difficulties other than with any other class of adults, with the exception that some may complain that it's harder for older people to learn a foreign language. We like games, interactive methods, etc. as much as any adults.

And remember, you're in control of the classroom. Students, regardless of age, expect the teacher to be in control of the classroom.
