running a survey in class

Hi.
As an activity for multi-national class of teens in summer school i would like to do a survey as part of project work. I have never done this before and would be interested in looking at lesson plans and reading about ways to go about it. I imagine the students writing their own questions, carrying out the survey (perhaps with another class) collating the results and presenting their findings in a follow up lesson.
thanks in advance. have not been on here for ages but am just about to start on a summer school post back in the uk and am really excited at the prospect of having a mix of cultures and languages in the room and NOT just following a course book!
