Hi everybody,
I need some help....I just found out that i'm going to be teaching at a summer camp for the entire month of august. I'll have four groups with seven kids each. The kids will be different ages and different levels. I'm almost positive they are expecting me to bring all my own resources. I've been teaching for about 2 years now, and i've encountered this type of thing before, but i just thought maybe someone could offer some ideas for summer camp type activities with a multi level class. Any input will help... Thanks.. JY

Will you be the only one teaching, or will there be other adults present? Thats a lot of students for one teacher to handle at one time.

I would recommend lots of songs with TPR as a starting point, since most kids enjoy them and those who don't know the words can still do the movements and have a good time. Other than that, I really don't know.

Just a quicky,

If its going to be 4 weeks then one of the most important things you need to do in the first week after they've gotten to know each other and you've run out of icebreakers, is teambuilding. Theres some great activities on the net that you can incorporate into ESL, just do a web search.
I've just returned from a 4 week camp with adult/students and they worked really well. Work on trust, i.e. theres a falling/leaning technique you can do to get them to trust each other. Look it up on the net, sorry I dont have enough time to find it myself at the moment. Another great one for kids is a game called 'Ha Ha'. Get all the kids to lie down in a circle with their heads on each others stomaches. Once you've done that, you ask the first child to shout 'HA' and so on around the group. It usually ends up with the kids, and yourself in giggles and it can continue for quite some time. Its great fun and it helps to break down the physical barrier of a group and then allows them to focus more on team work. Sorry have to run, but like I say do a web search on 'teambuilding skills' and for later in the camp as they will begin to miss their families, 'motivators' to bring them back from the gloom.

Cheers
