Who killed Dana Leighton?

Post by revel » Mon Jul 19, 2004 6:40 am

Hey there all!

So, here it goes. Keep it short and agile.

Mr Leighton is a mysterious millionaire. He is young, mid-forties. Not much is known about him, he was married and had a daughter but nothing is known about his wife and his daughter was killed five years ago, the crime never having been solved.

Mr Peabody, Mr Leighton’s personal secretary. Also in his mid-forties, he has worked for Mr Leighton for several years and is a faithful worker. A kind and observant man, he is able to make comments that can clear up a confusion at once. He is single and well paid, as he practically lives Mr Leighton’s life for him.

Dana Leighton, Mr Leighton’s only child. She strayed from the nest at an early age. 25 years old at death. Had worked as a chorus girl, having defied her father’s desire that she attend university in order to prepare herself to take on the family business (which some suspected was mollusk canning.) She was poisoned at the club she worked in, the Nightingale, the evening on which she would have made her debut as a jazz singer, had another girl not been given that job. The police were inconclusive in their findings on the event, and it was finally put down as a vengeful and envy motivated suicide. She was not particularly liked by anyone, and perhaps the overrun on suspects simply confused the inspectors at the time.

Rachel Bates, 25 years old, single, singer, makes about 15,000€ a year. She’s a timid girl, shy and uncertain, a clinger. Miss Bates began singing five years ago. Her first job was a couple of songs in the club where Dana Leighton had died. Before singing, Bates had served tables in this same club, three years. She lives in a small set of rooms in a private house with a family-setting. She dresses in fashion but simply, preferring plain colors and long sleeves.

Mrs Loraine Berut, between 40 and 50 years old. She is a widow, with a hefty amount of money in her bank account. She is hard-headed, obstinate, single-minded, bull-headed. She is always right and never takes “no” for an answer. She is firm but tries to be pleasant with her firmness. It doesn’t matter that she doesn’t know anything about anything, once her mind is set and her opinion is given she will not be moved. She married young to a fine service-man who, after twelve years of marriage, died leaving her two acceptable children, a boy and a girl, as well as a small fortune which she has managed with a steel fist. Since her oldest, the boy, got married a couple of years ago, she’s taken up travel and loves to talk about her many trips to as many people as she can.

Todd or Mandy Berkenshaw
American, 31 years old. Single. Working. Economically comfortable. Been living abroad for a number of years and so is less “yanqui” than most. Still amazes friends with an egoist point of view and the strange suspicions developed from them. A conspiracy believer, always making strange connections that others don’t always understand. That doesn’t matter, there is a lot of self-confidence. Is a successful talent agent for singers with a lot of connections on the nightclub scene.

Mr Leighton has invited several people whom he suspects of having killed his daughter to have a weekend with him in a remote Spanish village. None of the guests knows the others at first, though connections between the guests will quickly be made and conclusions drawn. In any case, Mr Leighton has prepared the scene so that one of the people in this rustic guest-house will suddenly confess a crime at the end of the weekend. He will then turn that person over to justice, with his witnesses, since this is the only way to avenge his daughter’s death.

Rules?

Post by revel » Mon Jul 19, 2004 6:55 am

Some “rules” for the game:

If you add a person, follow this basic informational scheme:

Name, age, social/civil position, economic questions, temperament, bio

And keep it sketchy so that information has to be sought and encountered.

If you want to add details, identify the person clearly.

Don’t hesitate to give a note on how this can be done with a class (giving a few details on the class composition). This is a class focused exercise. It is complex, but so is communication.

Comments that aren’t part of the development of the dramatic exercise, in italics to set them apart visually.

peace,
revel.
