Asking for permission activites and games

Hello,

I am searching for activities and games for teaching "Asking for permission." I've already thought of one game called "Mother May I," but I am teaching high school students. I think this may be a little childish for them. Any ideas would help. Thanks.

How about making cards with things that they want to do - May I go to the bathroom? May I get a book from the library? May I chew gum? May I put my feet on my desk? May I open the window? May I copy my friend's homework? and so on. You could try to classify the questions in some way - reasonable, special and impossible, perhaps. Keep the cards in a box and students can earn the right to come and get a card when they have successfully finished and marked their work and carry out the activity suggested or save it for a time they will need it or to trade with others who have the card they want. This would be more of a review activity. You could put in some surprise ones.

With college students, I taught 3-4 ways of asking permission, including "Would you mind if I..." and "Could I just...", and 3-4 ways of responding, including a rather rude "No way!" We then developed mini-dialogs such as
- Would you mind if I opened the window?
- No, not at all.

- Would you mind if I turned on the TV?
- Yes, I'm trying to study now. Could you wait 15 minutes?

- Could I just copy your English homework?
- No way!
