Going to start teaching special needs - help

I am a full-time English teacher but going to start a couple of hours a week doing some voluntary teaching. The children are special needs, physically/mentally (not sure what PC term is now) - so much so that they aren't allowed to attend normal school.
Does anyone have any experience teaching in a similar situation? Any tips?

"The children are special needs, physically/mentally (not sure what PC term is now)". the more appropriate term is 'diversity'. Individual educational lesson plan for each student is a good start because each child has different level of disability. It is a good idea to start with assessment before writing lesson plans.
