Hello Everyone,

I am looking for activities and games to teach Australian slang to Japanese high school students, who are doing a homestay in May. Any ideas? Their English level is OK, at best.

.

Choose 12 really common ones (like G'day) and being with a matching activity. Students try to pair off the Aussie slang with the English counterpart. Maybe throw in some that will cause amusement, such as 'dunny'.

Now challenge students to make a short dialogue using 6 or more of the slang terms. Give them scenarios such as: two people in a restaurant talking about sport, a customer and a shop assistant, two people meeting in an airport etc

In my experience, students enjoy activities like this because they get a chance to show how creative they are.

Hey Brian,

Thanks a heap! I will look at that one closely. I will just pick a few of them and go from there. Another idea I was thinking was to make this into a contest. Make big cards with the Australian English and a sentance with the word, so that the students have to guess the the meaning is.

Thanks and keep the ideas coming!
