BORROW Vs LEND
I'm teaching the difference between lend and borrow, but my students don't seem to understand. How can I explain to them the difference without confusing them?
Well, you might confuse them anyway, but this is what I do. (I'll try to explain the pictures I draw.)
On the left side I draw a picture of a person with a book in his/her hand, holding it out to the right side. (stick pictures work fine.) On the right side I draw a picture of a person holding out a hand toward the left, but with nothing in it. The person on the left is lending the book to the person on the right. (I usually draw an arrow from the left to the right.) The person on the right is borrowing from the person on the left. The picture is the same. Seeing that the action is the same, but you use a different verb depending on the point of view has usually helped my students.
