Warm up activities for Junior High School

Post by patsensei » Tue May 23, 2006 3:18 pm

hi. I'm teaching English conversation at a Junior High school in Japan. I was wondering if anyone could share a good warm up activity to get the brain fluid moving in these young kids. Any help appreciated. thanks.

I used the "If you're wearing (blue jeans/black shoes/a T-shirt etc.), change your seat". After you give a sentence a couple of times, sit down quickly in a vacant seat so a student has to give the next sentence. Good for reviewing colors and clothing.

You can use a story-telling game to start your class and to practice your Ss's oral English. In this game, you start the story with one sentence, say, yesterday I went to cinema. Then ask each of your Ss to contribute one sentense to finish the story. The sentense you give can relate to your topic.

Have the kids do attendance

Change places with a student and have him to the attendance.

You should establish a routine for it that brings in just a tad of conversation. I've found this routine good:

T: Chon Ho?
CH: Here.
T: How are you today?
CH: I'm happy. (Sad, etc)
T: Why are you happy?
CH: Because today my mommy give me chicken for lunch. Chicken is very yummy!
T: Sun Hee?
SH: Here.
T: How are you today:
SH: I'm tired.
T: Why are you tired:
SH: Because the baby cry at night and I did not sleep.

etc.

You exchange places with the student taking attendance and answer to his name and answer the questions.
