Hey, there! I am teaching English in China too! Chinese students are culturally taught to be a perfect listener instead of an active speaker. On the one hand, they respect you. (sometimes I felt kind of flattered:-)) But on the other hand, students will speak only when called upon by teachers. So you won't expect them to be volunteers in class. I found that students would be active if you can play a game (e.g. role play) or show them a new movie. Anyway, good luck!

Thanks!
I am a new English teacher in senior high school.
there is a problem.
some of the students are learning good, but some are learning so so or bad.
So some students like me and my class, but some of them even do not answer me in the class.
they just sleep or do something else .
So yeah ...
the idea of show them a movie or play some English songs can help.
i would like to chat with you about the teaching.

Hello, I am also a new teacher in China, though I am teaching University students. I would be greatful for any advice anywho can give. I've definately noticed that students are very reluctant to volunteer answers, and getting them to 'engage' in speaking seems somewhat difficult. Any suggestions from anyone?

Teaching in the university is much easier than in the middle school.
most of the student have the basic ability to learn.
so you teaching target is not teaching them language points or grammer, but guiding them how to learn by themselves.
find some thing intreseting to teach on the class, and do not make them feel nervous and you should neither be nervous. Be their freind
After they answer your question, you should say Wow
Way To Go
Super
You're Special
Outstanding
Excellent
Great
Good
9Neat
Well Done
Remarkable
I Knew You Could Do It
I'm Proud Of You
........................
Hope this can help
