One off lesson help

Post by juggler » Wed Aug 03, 2005 2:18 pm

Hi,
I'm teaching in China, I teach kindy kids, teachers from the countryside who come to the city to learn English and I also teach several 1 - 2 - 1 classes.
My problem is that sometimes I go teach at primary and middle schools in the countryside. These lessons are one-offs, i.e. I'll teach them once and probably never see them again. The thing is I think
these lessons are getting worse and worse. I need some games and activities to put the spark into the lessons. The primary classes aren't so bad because I can upgrade some of the kindy games, but the middle school lessons are lacking. The class sizes range from 40 to 80 and there are usually a lot of Chinese English teachers there to learn from the foreigner. Does anyone have any games or
activities that could help?
Thanks in anticipation

You can try the activities forum...

I have a game/activity that I often use to teach verbs and nouns. I get students working in twos (in your case maybe fours would be better) then I get some large sheets of paper and get them to outline their body on a large sheet of paper.

If the class is only learning nouns then all they have to do is label body parts or articles of clothing on the outline. If they are learning verbs then you need to get them to write actions that are associated to the body parts e.g. knees bend, or hands clap, shoulders shrug etc. Whether they learn nouns or verbs is dependent on what level the students are at. Encourage them to be creative and think of different actions for body parts (nose: blowing nose, fingers: playing an instrument).

hope this helps!
