Five Minute Lesson Plan--Advice needed

Post by bonbonbon814 » Wed Sep 15, 2004 1:25 am

Hello.
I am a hopeful teacher and will be interviewing for an Alternative Certification program in a few weeks(NYC Teaching Fellows). Part of my interview is a five minute lesson plan that can be taught in any subject, to any grade level.

As my teaching assistant experience and education have made me eligible to teach either ESL or Language Arts/English/Writing, I have decided to teach my interview teaching lesson in ESL. However I am a bit stumped.

Does anyone have any advice as to where I could obtain ideas for a quick and effective five minute lesson. The time span seems so short. I know the interviewers will want to see that I can effectively teach a topic or idea with a beginning, middle and end, in that five minute time period.

Any suggestions as to resources that might be helpful, or anyone who has been through one of these interviews would be greatly appreciated! I am thinking that I would like to gear my five minute lesson towards elementary or middle school age. I am unsure what the extent of ESL teaching in NYC schools is: I know that bilingual education is probably quite common at the secondary level, but I was under the impression that by high school age most students have a grasp of the language and would not take ESL as a full time course. I am under the impression most of the strictly ESL teaching opportunities would be at the elementary level and possibly middle school. Any insight into this issue is also greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help!
