What are the effective ways to motivate students?

My students live for marks and giving them credit seems to motivate them to study hard. But I do not believe that their attitude is correct and I do not want to give them credit all the time. Can you suggest ways of motivating students? There are 50 junior secondary students in my class (age: 12-4 years old).

You mean they should be studying in order to speak the language, to understand it, and to benefit from your teaching? If they study in order to get good marks excusively, they'll toss their books into a corner never to open them again once the pressure is off, won't they?

For me, the best motivation has always been making connections to native speakers, and travelling to these places myself, seeing my knowledge applied in action.

Maybe you could hook up your students with an American or British class their age, or encourage them to take exchange students in. There's also the option to take part in a volunteer holiday - if you google "volunteer holidays", a whole list of site springs up. It would be cool, of course, if you participated in such a program first so that you can tell stories that whet their appetite.

Yo, and remember, the *best* motivation is success, if they see themselves progressing, f they see how it's getting easier with time and effort, and if they see themselves as "good at" English, they are more likely to keep it up after their regular schooling is over.... at least that's what I think.
