I've been asked to recommend/buy English books on science for the high school and junior high school. The idea is to give students real material on science so they can be somewhat better prepared for college when they are forced to read more scientific literature in English.

Let's not argue with the merits of this philosophy. About all I CAN agree with is that Japanese high school kids would be overwhelmed with high school textbooks from western countries, and they would be better off with junior high books or even lower level.

What books could you recommend? The school would rather have new books than used ones, so I really can't ask schools back home in the States for old copies. Of course, if you COULD recommend some sources for free copies, that would be great, but we have a moderate budget to get things started. This is the first time the school has opted for this kind of thing.

The only thing I remember about my JHS science books was that they were boring as anything. What about scientific magazines for kids? These would have the advantage of keeping it short, so that the students might not feel as overwhelmed at first, and having lots of different subjects.

When I was young, my parents bought me a subscription to National Geographic Oddysey, National Geographic's magazine targeted towards late elementary school students, and I loved it- I read it faithfully every month. It talked about simple science as well as different cultures and such.
