Private Conversation Lesson Fees

Post by kleejp75 » Mon May 01, 2006 5:34 pm

I am just starting out tutoring English conversation on a one-on-one basis to students in Chicago. I have tutored in Japan privately, and I am familiar with the going rate for one hour sessions there. However, I do not know what the going rate is for teachers in the mid-west. I have a CTEFL as well as over five years experience teaching in Japan. What should I charge for a one hour slot?

I live in a university town with about 3000 international students. Although some are willing to pay up to $35 a hour, I charge $20-25. One, because I do absolutely no preparation and give no homework. Two, because I am aware of how most of these students struggle financially. I have been teaching ESL professionally for 26 years and do the tutoring on the side. I enjoy it as much as they do and feel that it's a fair price for what comes so naturally to me.
