There are English teachers here, I am a Toefl-examer. I got a couple conversations, please help me. Thanks a lot.

1. M: Hey! Marry, one of my students has decided to stop taking piano lessons from me, I could give
you her slot on Tuesday from 8 to 9 if you wanted.
W: Gee! Maybe I give you a wrong impression, I am not that serious about playing!

What does the woman mean?


2. W: I just want to let you know that your paper on 18th century France shows the particularly good
understanding of subject matter.
M: Actually, I didn’t have much time to do the research, so I was worrying you were calling me in
criticism.

What can be inferred about the student?



3. M: At this rate, I don't think I am ever going to get better on writing. My composition mark has been
the same all semester. Straight “C.”
W: What did your instructor say keeping your marks down?

What does the woman assume?



4. W: Have you been studying for the history test on Friday?
M: Yeah, but I can’t believe it covers the whole semester’s material. I’ll never be ready.
W: Well, it doubts how you keep up with reading assignment during this semester.

What does the woman imply?

1.The first one I think it might meant she could give Mary the normally student's time i.e. 8 to 9 to her (Mary) for piano lesson.

2. Shows the student had something in his/her mind did not pay attention to the compliment.

3.Might be this woman is thinking in terms of number C,B,A...

4. I think the woman was testing whether he was working hard or not.

On these short conversations, the question always refers to the last person talking. The first sentence is just to give context to the second sentence. That helps me when I am not sure what the question is asking.

So, see if this helps.
1. The woman means that she doesn't really want to take lessons. She is saying "no."
2. The student was surprised to hear a positive comment about his paper.
3. The woman is assuming that the instructor has told the man the reason for his low grades.
4. (I'm pretty sure there is an error in your transcription, so this is a shot in the dark.) If the woman said "I doubt that," it implies that the man is a good student who has been studying hard.
