Distance MAs in TESL/TOEFL

Post by rfg » Fri Jun 10, 2005 5:20 am

I've been teaching ESL for a number of years in Korea and am thinking of doing a distance MA. Do Koreans distinguish between the universities that offer them? There seem to be so many - McQuarrie, U of South Queensland, Leister, Birmingham, New England NSW, to name a few. There's also a program at Sookdae U in Seoul. If anyone has any comments or opinions about distance degrees and which universities are worthwhile I'd sure appreciate them.

that program looks very good and cheap, but you can't do it outside of the US.

A friend of mine got an MA TEFL from UK Redding all online for US $9,000.

University of Canberra has an MA TEFL for about $5,000

They are considered as good as on-campus.

It's a lot of work.

Most Korean educational institutions can distinguish a reputable Masters' of Arts degree in TESOL from a name only degree since they're aware of the fact that there're so many online programs which are not worth at all. There are lots of Korean administrators who have studied in the U.S. and they're the ones who know which institutions of higher education offer creditable degrees in the field of TESOL.

I know that spending little money is important for most people, but do not think of getting a degree that's not worth a bit.

FYI, it's Sookmyung Women's University that offers TESOL program, not Sookdae U. "dae" is a shortened form of "dae-hak-kyo" meaning "university". So if you say "Sookdae U, you're saying university twice. The TESOL program at Sookmyung Women's Univ. will be much better than other online TESOL programs that grant a paper only MA degree.
