teaching in Jamaica (the Island)

Post by alkin » Fri Aug 06, 2004 2:59 am

Hi! I'm a teacher in NYC and in the process of helping another teacher mentor her Jamaican colleague with classroom mgt skills. The problem is that her students are giving her a difficult time: while she is a great math teacher, she (an older woman) is unaccustomed to the culture of her students, and they, unaccustomed to her style. My question is, what is the teaching culture like in Jamaica? I need to know some background info to help assess the situation.

-style of teaching basic in Jamaica?
-rigid rules in schools? not so rigid?
-strict policies?
any info would be helpful. thanks.
