The technical aspect of showing videos

I happen to have a modest video collection for teaching ESL/Business English. However, the videos are formatted to US VCRs. I am moving to Europe next year and want to take them with me...but I won't be able to view them there.
Any suggestions?

Well, yes and no.

I'm not an expert but I think that most VCR's on sale here in France are now multi-standard, in other words, it's possible to view tapes in PAL, SECAM, NSTC, etc.

I often watch tapes from my American friends on my 'French' VCR with no problem.

But it would be good to check the situation in the country that you will be visiting.

Thanks! :)
I had no idea that one could buy these VCR's in France. Are code free DVD players also for sale in Europe? That would be a dream come true!

Seen them in England, not yet in France.

Are code free DVD players also for sale in Europe?

When I lived in Germany, a few years ago now, I ordered my multiregion DVD directly from the US via the internet. 8)

Here's a french link that might be useful:

Iain,
I found similar ones here in the US. So, it's better to lug it half around the world then?

Good question.

I thought you were in France already...

It rather depends on how long your going over for. If you buy a US DVD player you'll also need to buy a 110V a.c. to 240V a.c. transformer. I've been there, done that :?

If you're staying in France for a good while, I suggest you buy one over there and sell it when you eventually leave. :)
