Type of DEGREE or CERTIFICATE

Post by Deb » Sat Feb 12, 2005 9:09 pm

Hi! I am very confused about what type of degree or certificate would be best for my career goals. I am a native English speaker with a bachelor's degree in psychology. I am a private English tutor for several international students at a local university. Almost all my students are adults. I prefer to work with adults and within somewhat informal settings. I would like to obtain a job with a non-profit or social service organization that specializes in assisting the refugee and/or immigrant communities within the United States.

I understand that on-line degrees are not very legitimate or reliable. I have been told that teaching overseas even without a degree could increase my chances of getting a job in the States but I would eventually need some type of degree or certificate. I have also been told that a MA-TESOL would be my best choice.

I am just starting out in this field and am still very confused by all the different acronyms and degrees offered for teaching English to non-native speakers.

Is it really necessary to get a master's degree?
Is a certificate a good option? If so, which ones?
Should I obtain a degree or certificate before teaching overseas?

My budget is a bit tight, and I am limited on time.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated :D
Thanks!
