newbie wanting to teach in taiwan

Post by ixena » Sun Jul 17, 2005 11:44 pm

Hello, everyone. I am new to both esl.com and wanting to teach overseas. I do not yet have a Bachelor's (I hope to study for and obtain while I am teaching). I also do not have a TESL certificate. I have heard that one can still easily obtain a teaching job without these in Taiwan. Does anyone have info about this? Also, I would like to teach in a smaller town (like Hualien). Has anyone taught in a smaller town? How was your experience? I am looking for general info. Such as: How is transportation getting to other cities? How is it finding housing? How about general shopping - both grocery and personal supplies (like soap)? Is it easy enough to find a teaching job in a smaller town? Any info that you guys can supply will be greatly appreciated. I am hoping to leave in October and am a bit edgy since I have no background in this and do not really know the situation there. A reliable source told me that there are not as many jobs as in the past, but from what he has seen there are still way more openings than bodies to fill them. I should also note that I am almost 40 Yrs. old!! Shouldn't be a factor, but I heard that 45 is considered a basic limit for teachers unless you have experience. Weird. Anyhow, thanks. :)

You need to go to the International Forums under Taiwan. You will find a wealth of information there and many more people to answer all your questions. You can also look in the Job Info Journals under Taiwan.
