Some tutoring hints for beginners

Post by SDC » Fri Oct 21, 2005 12:22 am

I am tutoring in esl for the first time and have no experience! I have a woman (adult) who is from Thailand and has been in the US for 3 months - communication between us is really almost zero. Any suggestions on activities that will help her learn some useful phrases? The program only lasts 10 weeks! We practiced counting change, and she seemed to pick that up. But I can't even relay to her to 'repeat after me', or 'here's what we say when in such-and-such situation'. What would be the most useful things for a person to know? She can write her name and go through most of the alphabet, as well as write her phone number. That's all I can figure out for now. Thanks for any input.
