What is the reality of teaching ESL in Toronto?

Post by ricecombo » Mon Mar 13, 2006 2:32 am

I am enrolled in a TESL program and would like to teach locally in Toronto.
There seems to be a lot of information regarding ESL teaching but not enough of things I want to know specifically. The ESL profession in adult education seems to be one that you need to gradually build up; the idea of establishing a stable income right away just doesn't seem possible. It seems like if you're lucky, you get to teach in 2 or 3 schools. I guess the idea of medical benefits is a long shot away? Is ESL teaching something that needs to be supplemented by another income? I'm just worried I won't be able to make a good living off ESL teaching.
I don't want to be working two jobs into retirement! If anyone has any comment on teaching ESL in Toronto, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
