Beginner or Intermediate: What to test for?

Post by tenmaya » Mon Oct 16, 2006 9:53 pm

I will be teaching an English class for parents at an elementary school in Dallas, Tx. However, I am not a certified ESL teacher, nor do I have any training. The administrators know this, but insist that I teach the class (I am interning with a community organization based in the school). I have decent, but certainly far from perfect Spanish. There is a huge demand from the parents to have English classes and so I figure I should break the large number up into beginner and intermediate groups.

I have hundreds of questions, but for now will stick with this one. I imagine that one of the first things that I need to do is figure out the skill level of the parents; what criteria do I use to determine who is a beginner and who is not.

I am grateful for any help and/or additional suggestions.
