using Romance-language vocabulary

Post by haowen » Thu Feb 22, 2007 12:17 am

I am teaching Business English to a native Spanish speaker who is also fluent in Portuguese and Italian. I am supposed to be focusing on listening comprehension, not grammar. He has an odd problem in that he has a much better grasp of speaking English than of listening. He is also becomes frustrated because it is (of course) much harder for him to pick up English than it was, for instance, Portuguese. What I would like to try is to find a text that uses primarily romance-language based English vocabulary, which I could read to him to get him used to the way words that would be familiar if he were to read them (for instance "conversation") actually sound when pronounced in American English. I'm not actually sure if this would help, but I would be interested in trying.
My question: can anyone recommend a text that uses largely Romance language vocabulary for the "subject identifying" words?
Thanks much.
