Adult Help....

Post by Courtney077 » Sun Oct 28, 2007 1:57 am

Hello, I am writing because I need help with one of my adult classes. I'm teaching in South Korea. There are 2 men in the class and they are both on the same level. But they both need help in speaking in complete sentences. and they both try to use words they know, in the wrong context. What is the best way to help them speak in complete sentences??? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!!!

Please give some example sentences of their mistakes so that we can have a better idea of what is going wrong.

I agree with Kootvela, you should provide more specific examples. In the meantime, however, you may want to train them more in conjunctions, articles, prepositions and pronouns, since Korean doesn't use them in the same way English does. They may be dropping them because they're trying to do a literal Korean-to-English translation.

What about a game?

I have only taught students in the U.S., but I have found that my adult Korean students (as well as my other students from around the world), enjoy competitive games. I might do something like dividing the class into teams and practicing the vocabulary words by puting them on the board and having the teams compete to see who can use the most words correctly in a complete sentence. Even if the two students do not perform well in this aspect, they can not help but learn from hearing the other students use the words in complete sentences. Possibly even allow a team to keep their point unless someone from the other team can explain why the sentence is not complete. There are numerous variations you can do with this type of activity.

Good Luck!
