Audiobooks suggestions?

Post by fiammetta74 » Fri Dec 28, 2007 6:45 pm

Hello everyone, I'm new here, I just registered.
I've only recently become an English teacher for adults. In my actual basic English course my best student is an almost blind lady, she loves to listen to English being spoken and I was thinking of making her a cd with a few stories. What stories would you suggest for a beginner?

CDs for beginners

As she's a beginner I'd suggest short poems or perhaps you could record roleplays for her.

A good source of spoken material is: http://librivox.org/

Another good place for spoken English material is the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learn ... ndex.shtml

And VOA has a good selection of shorter stories http://www.voanews.com/english/portal.cfm

Nearly all the material on these sites are available as MP3s to make a nice recording for her.

Of course I've got a couple of MP3s available on my site, but they maybe a little difficult: http://www.jamesabela.co.uk/advanced/listening/ and

Audiobook suggestions

What does the student like to read? I'd tailor my suggestions to her tastes.

You might try short stories or a classic novel from the students' native country. Amazon has an extensive collection.

I've used Don't Sweat the Small Stuff - with short, self contained chapters - for classes.

Yet, as previously noted, VOA and the BBC both have wonderful collections of listening materials.

Good luck!
