Very Little English - Where to start

Post by midesire » Thu Mar 06, 2008 7:28 am

Hello,
I have two new adult students in my class. They speak very little English. One of them does know the alphabet and can count up to 70.

Where do I start? Help please.

Thank you all for the help you have given me in the past. I is appreciated.

I think, a good textbook might be the answer. I'd recommend New Interchange Intro. Have been using it for 6 years in adult classes.

 have the one that can count to 70 teach the others how to do the same. Then teach him or her how to count to a hundred and continue the process! hahahah Just kidding, sorry couldn't help being silly.

Hi there,

I had a similar situation about a year ago - so I have much empathy for your situation!

I found this book of activities for beginners really helped.

I'm subscribed to the Oxford University Press - in the English File Team.

I get tons of material in the email, ideas, articles, lesson plans. I was at their site a moment ago ( http://www.oup.com/ ) and there are many interesting things about teaching adult beginners. I strongly recommend the subscription, it's free, it takes a couple of minutes and it's very useful to every teacher:)

This is the url with the article I was reading

http://www.oup.com/elt/teachersclub/art ... ?cc=global

but to access there's need to subscribe.

Hello Syl,

Thank you for the Oxford site. I signed up for a membership. The information the site provides really is very good.

My class is going well, and the students are learning and progressing.

I appreciate the help from forum members.

Thank you again.
