"Thanks" as a verb
In the sentence "Thanks for doing that," is "Thanks" a verb, and "doing" a gerund? It seems obvious that it is so, but I have found no explanation for the word "thanks" as a verb. Does it imply "I thank you"?

Thanks
Or maybe: (I give) (my) thanks to you for doing that
