New to the forum - need some advice please :)

Hello,

Like many others I have had a complete career change. A gf of mine did her training and assessment certificate and got a job teaching business English pretty much straight away and this is where I got the idea to teach as well ( she has lost that job since I started my course). I ended up calling couple of colleges in Sydney and they told me that if I want to teach than I should get my CELTA certificate. I absolutely love it! I love teaching, I taught I was going to be very nervous but it wasn’t like that at all. Now however I am wishing I didn’t spend the $$$ on the course because it looks like there are no jobs in Sydney available (after having read the comments on the job forums).
I have contacted couple of colleges to see if they have any vacancies however no responses as yet. I would be happy with 15hrs of teaching but I don’t know if this is an impossible dream. What do you guys think?? I can’t go to another country or even different city due to family obligations. I just really want to be a teacher but I can’t afford to not receive any employment at all for the next couple of months. Should I just forget about it?

Where is Sydney? There are quite a few of them around the world?
Have you thought of having a home business tutoring?

Hi,

I am willing to teach anywhere in Sydney really. I have just read heaps of information about how there is a decline in the amount of international students coming to Sydney + our dollar is quite high and due to this collages aren’t hiring.

Setting up a home business is not a option for me at the moment.

I dont know.. its just not looking good atm, I am going to give it a really good go after i finish my CELTA but i don't have high hopes.

If you able you can volunteer at a facility that you would like to work at for a short time. Since you are new you have the perfect opportunity to propose a short internship. Make sure you get to know and help all the teachers - word of mouth is the best way to get a job.

Are there any ESOL schools in Sydney, specialising in teaching English to migrant workers and asylum seekers? I started out as a volunteer at an ESOL school here in the UK and have been doing paid hours for the last year or so.

Hi all,

There r jobs if u can work with migrants, for those jobs however you need to go back to uni to get qualified. My original plan was to get couple of yrs experiance and than get further qualifications.

Do you guys think i should write to the schools saying that i would be happy to work for free for a short period of time? Or should i specificly ask if they offer internerships?

I wouldn't write. I would go to the schools and offer my volunteer services. Go at lunch time or coffee time and the administrator may let you talk to the teachers to see if one or more would let you volunteer in their classroom.

I guess you could write for an internship.

Have you spoken to the teachers of your course? They usually have ideas of where the vacancies are. Some CELTA schools will even place you in a co-op position for the experience after you finish the course. You could tell the school that if they don't do it already.

Hi there!

Where exactly have you been looking for teacher jobs? There has to be somewhere that is willing to hire you. I would recommend that you solidify your resume so that you stand out much above the rest. Keep positive and you will be able to fulfill your dreams of being a teacher =)

I also had a major career change and did an on-line/face to face TESOL course and got a job teaching in Poland for a while.

For various reasons I returned to Sydney and then worked at a private ESL school in Pitt Street for a couple of years. I have since moved back to Poland. I found the Sydney job by searching on the web and I recall more than 100 private schools popped up.

There are heaps of private schools in the CBD, just walk down the street and look. Castlereagh, Pitt, Market Streets ... that end of town. Most suburbs have one too but the opportunities are naturally more limited.
