Howdy all - I'm trying to create a list of book recommendations for my adult English learners, and I'm wondering if you have any suggestions.

Currently my list is all American writers, but I would like to add some British, Canadian, Australian, etc. authors as well. Also, I'm trying to limit the list to short texts (under 250 pages) with nothing too kidsy. (In other words, avoiding typical suggestions like Harry Potter and Charlotte's Web...)

Relatedly, if there are any textbooks you commonly recommend to adult students for self-study, I'd love to hear which books you suggest!

If you are looking for a Canadian classic, then you should definitely include The Handmaid's Tale. Though it is roughly around 300 pages, it could be a thought provoking book for adult learners. I remember how many of my student's expressed their strong opinions about the book through argumentative essays.
