Hi, I am a new person here, and need some information from somebody out there...
I want to teach abroad, but need enough to live on (myself and 2 teenaged boys). Does anyone know what a decent salary would be in Beijing? thanks!

This is the wrong forum to ask this kind of question. Go to the China forums.
Just my opinion: you should think very hard whether it is in the interest of your kids to move to a foreign country at their tender age!
Peking is an expensive place. Where will your kids be schooled? You won't be able to pay for their tuition at a decent international school!
And, jobs are unstable.

Janer,

Roger is a long-time resident of China with lots of teaching experience there. You'd best take his advice seriously, although there are plenty of people (including Roger) who are perfectly happy teaching in Beijing and/or other places in China.

You didn't say what your qualifications are, but if you are a qualified teacher, you and your sons might want to think about Taiwan. It is possible to earn reasonable money there if you're willing to work hard enough. Again, though, you might think about Roger's comment about your sons' schooling. If they are willing to attend regular public school they will have to be fluent in Mandarin (at least in Taiwan, but probably also in Beijing). The alternative, attending American school, will cost much more than you will earn as a teacher.

I wish you the best in your quest, however.

Japan is a really good place for families and the boys will be fascinated with the life there. The salary is good. Don't register them in schools though because you won't be able to afford the cost of either regular public schools or the International schools. Take along correspondence courses from your home - they are available although not everyone will tell you about them. Just keep at it till you track them down. Then you can home school them. There are often home school clubs with International parents in the larger towns and the kids can get together so they have friends to study with. They can meet Japanese friends in sports and social conditions by joining clubs which are cheaper. It is a super opportunity for your whole family and one not to be missed if they are willing to go. Your whole family can be hired by a private school in Mongolia or other places like that and they will pay for accomodation and food. You will live like Kings compared to the local population but there won't be money left over. The experience will be worth more money than you could ever earn though. The kids will be in the school studying with the others and learn the language and of course, teach the others English in the best way possible. It is never easy but it is worth it.
