First day! Multilevel, Placement

Post by vlseura » Thu Dec 30, 2004 7:03 pm

Hi. I've never taught an adult ESL, or any ESL class before, and I'm to start one this month. From what I know, most (not all) work at a local labatory, and are diverse ages, languages, and abilities. I am looking for ideas about what I should do our first class (2 hrs.) in order to figure out how to ability group for small group work, make lesson plans (determine what they need/want to learn) etc. Does anyone know any worksheets for oral/written questionarres, hints for how to go about this etc? Any help appreciated. Thanks, Vanessa

You might talk with them, as a group, and as individuals within the group, about what they would like to get from your class. If this is done with thoroughness, it should take most of your first class meeting. But probably not all of your 2 hours. You might also have a couple of worksheets for them to work on (in pairs, maybe)...maybe some "business English" basics...all of which should help you to gauge the range of their abilities.

Good luck, Vanessa. Remember that they will look to you for leadership.

P.S. You might also do some reading yourself on English as a language, on its acquisition as a second language, and on teaching suggestions (especially if you're not accustomed to teaching).
