"Mail-Order-Brides" and ESL teachers

Post by Sarah at Tahirih » Wed Mar 09, 2005 9:22 pm

Dear ESL teachers,
In working with foreign women who have met their abusive U.S. citizen husbands through "mail order bride" agencies, we at the Tahirih Justice Center (www.tahirih.org) are finding that ESL teachers often play integral roles in helping abused foreign women seek help. As part of an effort to better regulate the "mail-order-bride" industry so that foreign women are better protected in the U.S., the Tahirih Justice Center will be introducing new legislation into Congress. To support the legislation, we are compiling stories of women who have come to the US through such agencies and have been abused. If you have any students who are in that position, or if you have ever worked with such students, we would greatly appreciate the opportunity to speak with you and/or your students (in confidence, of course). Please contact [email protected] if you are willing to share your story. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you.
