Advice Needed for South America Courses and Texts

Hi,

I am traveling around Central America at the moment and I am researching my options for teaching English in South America. I could use a little advice.

I do not have a certification. I would like to get certified, but I don’t know if the $US1650 or so is in my budget. I heard that in places like Peru and Argentina it is possible to get a job and learn that way. I am no stranger to teaching in general, although I have never taught English before.

If I can come up with some cash for a certification course, does anyone have any school suggestions in Costa Rica or Central America?

Also, I would love some book recommendations that cover proper use of English grammar and word structure. For example, a traveler I met recommended “Practical English Usage” by Swan. Any other books that are recommended for the type of experiences I am about to encounter?

Thanks for your advice!
Jeff

Hello Trail,
I don't have any suggestions for schools in those areas however, I do have suggestions to get you started on research, books to read, etc...

If you are teaching in a school that focuses on grammar, which 99% of them do (except mine), then it would be handy to learn the grammar rules in order to thus impart said rules on your students. However, if you want to teach them how to use a language and use it effectively, teaching them grammar directly cannot do this as effectively as teaching them in a more natural way. Stephen Krashen has said this for a long time now. I would look him up, you can read one of his books online and read many of his articles at http://www.sdkrashen.com/main.php3
This will get you started with some language learning theory.

Thank you for that information!

What is a good online resource for locating TEFL certification courses offered in South America? Or better yet, any recommendations on schools in South America?

Thanks,
Jeff
